So basically, if you don't know the Hermès Birkin or Kelly then please do yourself a favour and either get out of the house more often or move out of the rock you so clearly live under. These two legendary bags are perhaps the most acclaimed and desired accessories in the world. Though instantly recognizable handbags usually feature large "CC's" or prominent "GG's", the Birkin and Kelly are distinct without any kind of logo or brand indication. Embodying the "if you know, you know" aesthetic, Hermès is renowned for their understated glamour - and both bags are no exception. The elitist of the elite, these pieces are more than just pretty handbags - they're status symbols. Having a Birkin or a Kelly is a way of saying "I have money" without actually having to say it. Ironic given how low-key the bags truly are.
Though we love a good Birkin here at Bagista, the Kelly resonates with us in a way no other bag could. The heart wants what it wants, right? I mean, you can't help who (or what) you fall in love with.
For a bit of background information, the Kelly made its claim to fame in 1954 on the set of Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief when costume designer Edith Head purchased a number of Hermès accessories for the star, Grace Kelly. Naturally, it was love at first sight. Can you really blame the girl? In 1956, the actress then married Prince Rainer the third, thus becoming the Princess of Monaco. Within months she fell pregnant and was photographed shielding her growing belly from the paparazzi with the Kelly bag. This photo made it onto Life Magazine and basically, the world went mad. Physical fights broke out in stores everywhere. Divorce rates increased due to women stealing their husbands credit cards. The sky came falling down. No but seriously, everyone wanted to get their hands on it. By that point, the Kelly had received its official name after the Princess of Monaco in 1977.
Kellys in general are bags that make your jaw hit the floor, this we all know. However, for today's "Bag of the Week" post, we're going to focus on this particular Kelly:
Okay so, if you aren't oo-ing, ah-ing and obsessing over this bag as much as we are then we're seriously questioning your taste. I mean, come on - how perfect is this itsy, bitsy, teeny, weeny little munchkin Kelly? Are you not dying over how CUTE it is? Do you even need any other bag? Does any other bag in this world even have to exist? You get our point - we just can't with this one. For those of you going "bUt WhAt CaN yOu EvEn FiT iN iT?" - listen. First of all, who cares? She's perfect so leave her alone. Second of all, you actually can fit a lot inside. Come on, what else do you really need besides your car and house keys, a cardholder, a singular lipstick and, like, a piece of gum?
Crafted in smooth Box leather, this little vintage baby is complimented by gold tone hardware and comes with a removable shoulder strap. Though it might be 23 years old, it looks almost as good as new with the exception to a few minor scratches. We know you'll want to take this bag out all the time and show it off to all your friends, but we recommend taking a little extra precaution due to its delicate leather. Some things require a little more TLC, you know? Like, she's high maintenance a little, but not in a negative way..
An investment piece that will last forever, you can never go wrong with purchasing a handbag from Hermès, a brand that continues to reign supreme of the luxury hierarchy. Timeless, sophisticated and just straight up beautiful, the Kelly is a bag that every woman should own - and if it were up to us, this would be the case. It's not a want; it's a need - point blank.
