We all know the stories of the iconic Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags, but how well do you know the Evelyne? A casual, every day bag from Hermès, the Evelyne is far less expensive than the Birkin or Kelly but remains one of the brand's most sought after bags. A completely different style, purpose and aesthetic, at first glance it's surprising that the Evelyne can even compete given it's practical nature. However, when fashion and function go hand in hand, magic is made - and the Evelyne is a prime example of this. Take a closer look and follow us on a journey through history, you'll see just how special the Evelyne really is.
Originally designed in 1978, the bag was named after Evelyne Bertrand, the former head of Hermès's riding department. Designed to carry grooming equipment including a brush, comb and other essentials found in a stable, it was relegated to specific retailers of other equestrian goods. It is now sold in nearly every Hermès location around the world.
Since its release, there have been three versions of the Evelyne - The Evelyne |, Evelyne || and Evelyne |||. The first and original Evelyne did not have an external rear pocket like the current version. The rear pocket was created on the second Evelyne, but only on the smallest model. Finally, the most recent Evelyne features a rear pocket on every size and now sports an adjustable canvas shoulder strap. The Evelyne was available in four different sizes, the TPM (mini), which is now discontinued, PM (medium), GM (large) and TGM (extra large).
Many people want to join the elite club where owning an Hermès bag is your ticket in. However, given the extortionate prices of the Birkin and Kelly, most don't know where to start. The Evelyne is the perfect first purchase when delving into the world of Hermès. The starting price for the TPM was 1130 GBP, although it is now discontinued many can be found on reseller websites. The PM retails for 2070 GBP, the GM retails for 2250 GBP and the TGM retails for 3100 GBP.
With its saddle-like silhouette, the Evelyne is a messenger bag with a prominent H logo constructed from perforated holes. Available in either Epsom or Clemence leather, the Evelyne is durable. Epsom is embossed calfskin, therefore the grain can rub out or flatten after many years of wear. Clemence is Hermès's most popular leather. It's thicker and heavier than most, but can slouch overtime. Sleek, stylish and sophisticated - the Evelyne is practical as well as luxurious. It's simple design makes it easy to pair with any casual outfit, whether you're grocery shopping, running errands, or catching up with your girlfriends over lunch, the it's the ideal companion.
The Evelyne is in investment piece that will last a life time. Fortunately, you won't have to break the bank to own one. The ultimate go-to bag, you can be glamorous and casual at the same time. A timeless bag that will remain in style and in your wardrobe forever, the Evelyne is truly a must-have.
