Under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele, Gucci is a brand known for its eccentric and flamboyant collections rich in creativity, originality and innovation. Acclaimed for their wide-range colour palettes and clashing textures and fabrics, Michele's playful collections are always rooted in deep meaning.
Deemed a genius of his time, Alessandro Michele was appointed creative director of Gucci in January 2015. A leading brand rooted in history, Gucci has always been at the top of the fashion hierarchy. However, it holds a different, some might even say a more important, significance at present - all thanks to Michele. Gucci has undergone a complete makeover. The reinvented brand branched out into foreign directions by creating their own unique and distinctive aesthetic. The general arrays of Gucci's extravagant, in-your-face pieces are crafted from alluring fabrics that often feature distinctive patterns, prints and brand signatures. These signatures include prominent logos, embellishment and embroidery and animal graphics, among countless others.
The brand's accessory line is no exception to their "out there" aesthetic. Antique, gold tone "GG" logos are depicted on almost every piece. Gucci's signature green and red stripes are also often illustrated on several handbags - as are monogram prints. Gucci never fails to hit the nail on the head when it comes to creative designs that take fashion lovers of the world by storm. Bag after bag, collection after collection, the newest Gucci accessory is always a must-have.
One of their most signature pieces is the Dionysus bag, which debuted Fall 2015. A bag with a story, the acclaimed line is inspired by the infamous myth of the Greek God Dionysus, son of Zeus. Legend has it that Dionysus transformed himself into a tiger in order to carry a young nymph across the river, which then became Tigris river. The Greek God, like other Olympian Gods, possessed conventional superpowers including vitality, longevity and resistance to injury. The Dionysus bag also depicts these features given its structured silhouette, timeless aesthetic and durable material.
Michele is often inspired by myths, creatures and stories. Most recently depicted in his latest Fall / Winter 2018 collection when one of the models was seen carrying a curled up baby dragon (one of Michele's favourite mythical creatures) as an accessory.
The Dionysus line brought forth an overwhelming sense of excitement amongst fashion lovers, critics, and clients around the world. To say that the Dionysus was an instant classic is an understatement - it was a phenomenon that surpassed "It-Bag" status. The original Dionysus is a flap bag, carefully crafted from beige, monogrammed canvas. It features antique, silver tone hardware and a mystical tiger head plaque. With accordion-like sides crafted from brown suede, this detailing is displayed on the second interior flap - also visible from the front in two triangle shapes.
The bag was so in demand that it has since been released in several different colours and fabrics, some with embellishment, embroidery and prints. One couldn't begin to describe the many features depicted on each Dionysus ever released - the list is endless. Notable Dionysus' include one with an emblazoned honey bee and one embellished with a floral motif from the brand's Blooms collection. The Dionysus line now includes not only flap bags, but shoulder bags, top handle bags and hobo styles - all featuring the acclaimed tiger-head plaque.
The Dionysus has the ultimate “cool factor" that appeals to a younger demographic. Perfect for every day usage as well as dressier evenings, it’s almost a necessity to have in your wardrobe nowadays. Although some might deem it "trendy" due to the amount of hype over it, the Dionysus will still remain a Gucci signature. Sophisticated but youthful, classic but contemporary, edgy but feminine - there's no doubt that you need it in your life.
