On the 2nd February, Givenchy confirmed that its Creative Director, Riccardo Tisci, had exited the French fashion house on amicable terms.
Givenchy is the elegant, feminine, cool label that women love to wear. Famously adorned by Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s, Hubert de Givenchy had created a brand that represented Hollywood glamour, and his long time muse was exactly the type of woman that the brand stood for. Since de Givenchy’s retirement in 1995, the fashion house has seen a number of talented designers taking the helm of the label.
Riccardo Tisci joined the label as Creative Director in 2005, and started to make changes to the overall aesthetic of the brand. With his high profile list of friends and contacts, he was already liked in the industry. He attracted an array of celebrity clientele, including the likes of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, for whom he designed her wedding dress. Tisci’s departure, effective as of January 31st, means we will likely enter a new era for the brand over the coming seasons.
Tisci’s vision for the brand was a moodier aesthetic, inspired by his love of hip hop and therefore creating edgier and more sensual collections. Now a brand that has established this aesthetic, all eyes will be on who is next in line to take the helm.
Due to his close personal relationship with Donatella Versace, it has been widely speculated that he is set to join the Italian label. However, this has been neither confirmed nor denied. It is true that his portfolio of gothic romantic designs would translate well for Versace and so it could be a perfect pairing for Tisci. With his long list of celebrity followers and his unquestionable talent, he is an attractive candidate for any of the top fashion houses. Although we could be waiting a while for further news on Tisci’s move, there’s no doubt that the fashion set will be following him to support his latest venture.
