Buying pre-loved items has never been more popular. With the fashion crowd growing more conscious of their footprints, and the vast choice of pre-loved items growing too, it is smart to make sure that you do everything you can to retain the value of your luxury items, in case that day comes when you want to swap it for something new (or pre-loved!).
The bags most sought after by fashion lovers are by brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Hermés, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga, to name a few. The most important thing to remember is that if you look after your bags, they can retain most of their value so you can maximise the amount that you will be able to spend on your next purchase!
Some of these brands have introduced authenticity cards with their bags. If your bag came with one – do NOT throw it away. Doing so can mean you could lose up to half of the resale value of your bag! If someone wants to buy a Chanel handbag, this is often the difference between a sale or not. Keep this card safe inside your bag.
If there is no authenticity card (not all brands have them) then you can retain the value of your bag simply by keeping hold of all of your original packaging. This includes the dust bag, box, carrier bag and receipt. If you keep all of these items, you will be able to resell the item much more easily, and keeping the receipt is a great way to remember how much you paid for it initially, which is useful information to pass on to any pre-loved website who are valuing your item.
Lastly, if you are buying a bag that one day you are hoping to sell, or even if you think you will keep it forever, take care of your luxury bags using the appropriate leather cleaning products, have the hardware polished or the piping replaced if it gets damaged. You can also clean the lining out to prevent stains and if you have a suede or velvet bag, use a brush to keep it looking good as new.
A great way to help your bag to keep its shape after use or between uses is to put some bubble wrap or tissue paper inside, snug enough to push out the sides. This will prevent creases in the leather where the bag has collapsed in or any misshaping. A few simple steps to keep your bag in good condition will make all the difference once you come to sell, and it will prove worthwhile when you can buy the next bag you have your eye on!
