In the world of luxury handbags, there has been a history of it bags that have become as famous as their namesakes. Three designers that have designed more than one bag each with a celebrity in mind are Hermès, Mulberry and Gucci. Some of the below have gone to be the most iconic bags for their designers.
French fashion house Hermès is a luxury fashion house that has gained a reputation for excellent craftsmanship and designs that are carried by the world’s most famous women. It is fitting that they have also used their famous fans to name some of their coveted handbags.
Perhaps one of the most famous handbags in the world of luxury is the Birkin. Named after British singer Jane Birkin in 1983 after Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas met her on a plane. She explained her need for a bag that was both practical and stylish, and the Birkin bag was born. Now, the Birkin is perhaps the most coveted luxury handbag in the world.
The Kelly bag was named after Grace Kelly in 1977 after she wore the bag in many public outings. Often the large bag was held by Kelly in front of her baby bump to disguise her pregnancy. Originally the bag was named the Sac à dépêches.
Founded in Somerset, England, in 1971 and gaining international acclaim for its focus on British heritage and its hand-crafted leather goods - Mulberry have since transformed into an international fashion powerhouse. The label has made a name for themselves creating pieces named after celebrities, with the most popular being the Alexa bag.
First introduced in 2009, the Alexa bag by Mulberry quickly became the bag to own. They wanted to create a bag that was satchel inspired, and was not fussy, almost masculine in its appearance and created that link between cool, edgy and casual that Chung is famous for. The bag was a bestseller for many years, but is no longer part of the Mulberry collection.
The ‘Del Rey’
In 2012, Lana Del Rey released her incredibly popular Born to Die album, which placed the singer firmly in the spotlight. In the same year, Mulberry named a retro inspired satchel after her. The brand wanted to create a bag that was inspired by her uptown glamour, and the Del Rey bag sold out in its first day when it became available at their flagship store in Bond Street.
The Cara Delevingne collection
The Cara Delevingne collection was actually designed and produced in collaboration with the British model. They created a bag that could be worn three ways – a backpack, handheld or worn over the shoulder. The collection came out in 2015 and was a huge success for the label.
Gucci has been one of the top players in Italian Luxury Fashion since 1921. Producing bold, statement accessories and using the finest materials. It was fitting that they would choose iconic starlets as monikers for their luxury accessories.
First Lady Jackie Kennedy is a style icon and has inspired a number of fashion looks still celebrated today. She always favoured a hobo style of bag, which has plenty of storage space and is comfortable to wear for the woman on the go. Glamourous actress and model Brigitte Bardot earned herself a namesake bag by Gucci. The bag is curvy and glamourous in its silhouette which is said to be inspired by Bardot.
